The new model will be designed to take on the likes of Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-Go.Times Of India reports that, according to its vendor sources, Hyundai’s South Korean R&D centre is working on a new Hyundai Santro which would re-enter the Indian market as the brand’s entry level hatchback. The tall boy hatchback made its Indian debut in 1998 and had a highly successful run both in domestic and export markets till the production came to an end in late 2014.

Even after two years, the Santro is reported to receive a significant amount of queries from customers. The small car was doing around 2500 units a month when it was phased out. It went offline not because of waning popularity but because Hyundai had a more modern Eon in place to take the baton from its old workhorse.

Since the Santro nameplate continues to command a positive recall in the Indian market, it makes sense to come up with an all-new model. It’s too early to talk about the specifics of the small car in question but it’s safe to assume that it will be a tall boy with crossover-like styling elements to take on the Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-Go.

The new Hyundai Santro is likely could be the first product in the company’s Indian portfolio to feature an AMT. Hyundai India’s CEO Young Kee Koo recently went on record to say that AMT models will be introduced from 2018.
