The fully camouflaged test mule carries forward the Nano’s sheet metal design but the hood and headlamps appear to be closer to the Nano Europa concept. The bumpers are derived from the GenX Nano but the final production version is most likely to adopt an entirely different front and rear fascias.

Closer observation also reveals that the wheels are now 13-inchers instead of the GenX Nano’s 12-inchers, the single wiper adopts double-arm design and a bonnet mounted windshield washer jet, and the fuel filler cap has been relocated from inside the hood to rear fender.

Being the biggest ever update for the Nano, the Pelican sports a new dashboard which borrows the centre console from the Tiago, complete with the Harman infotainment system. The signature Tata steering wheel has been retained but the instrument console has been relocated from the centre console to conventional place behind the steering wheel.

We expect the Tata Pelican to be powered by a three-cylinder petrol motor which displaces around 800 cc and has around 60-70 PS on tap. We also expect the bigger motor to be paired with a new 5-speed manual transmission alongside an optional AMT. Needless to say, the city car will feature more equipment than the GenX Nano.

The Tata Pelican will be positioned above the Nano and below the Tiago to take on the likes of Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-Go. Expect the Pelican to be ready sometime next year with an attractive pricing.
