Payakaraopet (Visakhapatnam): Two chemists were killed and 17 sustained minor injuries in a chemical reactor blast at block-I of Deccan Fine Chemicals (India) Ltd, near Rajanagaram, in this mandal, early on Saturday. The victims were V Ramu (35) of Narsipatnam, and G Subba Rao (33) of Peddapolla, near Amalapuram. Both are permanent employees.

The injured were first rushed to a private hospital in Tuni from where Ramu and Rao were shifted to a corporate hospital in Visakha City where they succumbed. Three of the injured suffered severe burns, while the rest had minor injuries. However, as a safety measure, they were kept under observation.

The injured include Vanki Dhanaraju, G Bangarayya, M Jagannadham, Jogiraju (from Rajavaram), N V S Sastry (Samalkot), N Praveen ( Payakaraopet), N Seshadri, G S Varma, G Durga Prasad, K Nagababu and Ramakrishna ( Tuni), T C S Subrahmanyam (Eluru), Ch Tata Rao (Nuzveed), G Anand (Ramabhadrapuram), Venkat (Kakinada) and S K S Kumar (Amalapuram).

Activists of CPM, CPI,CITU and former MLA and YSRCP leader Chengala Venkata Rao staged dharna demanding justice to the families of the deceased, the injured and to beef up safety at the work spot. Responding to the agitation, manager (HR) U B N Raju announced that two workers were killed. Terming the incident ‘most unfortunate’, he assured that the company will do justice to workers, as per the Act. It will beef up safety.

Narsipatnam RDO Surya Rao and Joint Chief Inspector of Factories Varma visited the site to assess reasons. When contacted, Varma told The Hans India the department was clueless about reasons. He said the management was summoning technical experts on Monday to assess the cause. ‘We were not informed about the fire or the blast by the company.

Following TV reports, we rushed to the spot to control the flames’, said District Fire Officer Krupa Rao. ASP, Narsipatnam Vishal Gunny, Yellamanchili CI H Malleswara Rao monitored the rescue operations. District CPI(M) secretary K Lokanadham demanded compensation of Rs 30 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 10 lakh each to the injured, besides treatment.
