According to police, Appala Raju, 48, who was on duty, shot himself with his service rifle in Army Garrison in Mehdipatnam area at around 4 am on Monday. He was living with his wife, Anasuya, and two children in Army Quarters 47 Brigade at Mehdipatnam.

“He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. However, no suicide note was found at the spot,” said the cops. Asifnagar ACP D Srinivas examined the spot where the jawan killed himself.

The Lance Naik was reportedly grilled by Special Investigating Team (SIT) in connection with the October 9 incident in which a boy was burnt alive allegedly by army men. The boy, Syed Mustafa, a student of a Madrasa and a resident of Siddiq Nagar was found with serious burn injuries near the main gate of the Garrison.

He told a magistrate in his dying declaration that some army men poured kerosene on him and set him ablaze. He died the next day while undergoing treatment.

Police had lodged a case under Section 302 (Murder) against unidentified army men and an SIT was constituted a few days ago to probe the incident. “He was one of the 70 persons being interrogated by the police in the case. The jawan was under immense mental stress due to the ongoing interrogation. The Army is fully cooperating with the SIT in the investigations,” said an army press release.

However, the wife of the jawan alleged that the police harassment was responsible for her husband’s death. She demanded action against police. A case has been registered under Section 174 (Suspicious Death) of the CrPC.

Meanwhile, reports are also emerging that the military person involved in the murder died in custodial death inside the Army Garrison, which has been reported as case of suicide. It is learnt that the City Police was about to declare the arrest of the victim as they had identified him.

Dr Lubna Sarwath, co-convener of the SOUL (Save Our Urban Lakes) and a member of Aam Aadmi Party, demanded a detail probe into the death of the military personnel in the Mehdipatnam Garrison. She said, “The SIT chief was transferred in the recent shuffle and we do not know who is heading the SIT now, and probing the matter. But it has to be done immediately.”

Major Quadri, head of an NGO Help Hydera¬bad and former Army officer, said, “The incident that happened on Monday is most unfortunate. But there is a need for a detailed probe in this matter. It is necessary to find out facts and figures of the unforeseen and undesirable acts and deeds happening in the military area, which is said to be the most secure place in the country.”
