Hyderabad: Three persons were arrested by sleuths of Task Force for indulging in replacement of original with fake IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers of stolen mobiles, which were later sold at a higher price. According to police, the accused Md Amer, 19, Md Ali Pasha, 25 and Tariq Jameel Khan, 28, all working at mobile shops cheated the people by selling stolen mobiles, after changing IMEI numbers.

While another accused Farooq, 25, remained absconding. Md Amer and Md Ali Pasha, who were working in Jagadish Market, developed the knowledge of changing IMEI numbers of Android version smartphones with fake IMEI numbers by using software. While Tariq and Farooq procured stolen cellphones, they were helped by Amer and Ali Pasha in changing IMEIs.

Later these mobiles were sold at a higher prices to prospective customers. “Since, the IMEI number was changed, the stolen phones could not be traced. Even it becomes difficult for police to track the same,” said N Koti Reddy, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Task Force).
