Hyderabad: A 30-year-old woman killed her two daughters by throwing them into a water sump at Chandrapuri Colony in LB Nagar and attempted to kill herself on Tuesday. The woman allegedly killed the children - Sahasra, 3, and six-month-old Akshara - following a dispute with her husband. Nirmala and her husband, Venkatesh Mallesh, 39, have been living at Chandrapuri Colony with their daughters for the past many years.

Venkatesh was upset with his wife for giving birth to another girl child and was frequently picking up quarrels with her. “They argued with each other on Tuesday evening. A few hours later, around 5.30 pm, when Mallesh left home, Nirmala in a fit of rage, smothered her daughters and threw them in the water sump outside their ground-floor flat,” inspector E Srinivas Reddy said.

When Mallesh came back and enquired about the girls, Nirmala said they were missing. He started searching desperately for his daughters, whose bodies he found inside the sump sometime later. “Nirmala tried to cover it up as an accident, but later admitted killing and throwing the children in the sump. She also tried to commit suicide,” the inspector said. Nirmala has been arrested on charges of murder, and Mallesh, who is a businessman, has been detained for questioning.
