A Class VII student of the prestigious Ramjas School in North Delhi has complained to the police accusing a teacher of molesting and sexually harassing her, prompting a series of similar complaints from angry parents.

An FIR was registered on Saturday, a day after the 13-year-old girl confided in her parents about the incident that took place a week ago on the school premises in Anand Parbat. She alleged the computer teacher had held her captive in the computer lab and molested her, touching her inappropriately and clicking her pictures with his mobile phone. She said he often passed lewd remarks, stared at her and that other girls had also been subjected to this harassment, the police said.

The teacher, Vinod Kumar was detained later in the night after a case under the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered. The computer teacher taught students from Class VII to IX. The girl has alleged that he threatened the students and warned them of dire consequences if they complained to their parents,” a senior police officer said.

Earlier, angry parents joined the victim’s family as they protested outside the co-ed school, demanding strict action and met the principal. They alleged 14 more students had been subjected to sexual harassment by Kumar, who joined the school only on April 1, and that many of the girls weren’t even attending classes as a result. Some also said this wasn’t the first such incident to occur in the school.

The school has tied up with NIIT for computer lessons and Kumar was on NIIT’s payroll. Devesh Mehta, manager of the school said that Kumar had been immediately sacked.

Statement from NIIT:

"NIIT has a zero tolerance policy in matters of such kind. Therefore we have terminated the services of the employee, even as an internal inquiry has been initiated. The company is extending all possible support and co-operation to the school and the authorities with the sensitivity that it deserves.”
