Eluru: City police arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with a hoax call, which detained the Howrah-bound East Coast Express at Eluru Railway Station last month. Eluru DSP G Venkateswara Rao told mediapersons here on Tuesday evening that on August 24, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) help line at Vijayawada received an anonymous call.

The caller told the helpline about a bomb on Howrah-bound East Coast Express. The RPF alerted the West Godavari police, as the East Coast Express left Vijayawada Railway Station just minutes before the call. The Eluru city police searched all the compartments of train over one hour and confirmed that there was no bomb in the train.

The DSP said that on the directions of Superintendent of Police, Bhaskar Bhushan, a special team was formed headed by II town Circle Inspector U Bangarraju to nab the unknown caller. The special team verified the mobile number from which the hoax call was received.

They found that the SIM card was purchased in Tanuku and on enquiry the team traced the caller as Varanasi Ramamohan Rao (23) of Mallipudi village in Penumantra mandal. DSP said that Ramamohan Rao earlier worked as announcer in Tanuku Railway Station. Due to disputes with Railway Station Master Ramana Murthy, he was terminated from the job. Besides announcer post, he is working as a priest, DSP added.
