Visakhapatnam: A 58-year-old lawyer Kunchuboina Bhagyalakshmi and her son K Phani Mahesh (42) committed suicide in a pact by setting themselves ablaze at their apartment in the city under the Two Town police Station limits on Friday.

According to police, Bhagyalakshmi was living alone in her house after separating from her husband Dr K Rama Rao 20 years ago. Phani came home last week and was to leave for Dallas on Friday evening. He even booked an auto-rickshaw to take him to the airport in the evening.

According to the police, at around 8 am, Phani asked the watchman of the apartment to bring a match box. An hour later, neighbours saw smoke coming out of one of the bedrooms and immediately called the police. When the police came and broke open the door, her burnt body was found in the main hall and Phani was found dead in the Pooja room.

“It is too early to say what could have driven the mother and her son to commit suicide. We came to know that her relation with her husband is strained for two decades and he has been practising in Tagarapuvalasa while she practiced her law in the city,’’ said DCP (law and order) Navin Gulati.

Phani has a sister who is settled in the US for many years now. His wife is in advanced stage of pregnancy and was expecting him to arrive in US on Monday. Bhagyalakshmi’s husband Dr Rama Rao came to see the bodies and told the police that he saw her for the first time after a gap of 20 years.Police are investigating the incident in various aspects.
