​Mahabubabad: Burglars broke into a jewellery shop during the wee hours of Friday at Maripeda mandal headquarters in the district and reportedly made away with huge quantity of gold and silver ornaments.

According to police, the incident took place during wee hours of Friday at Swetha Jewellers near the local police station. It was said that the thieves broke the locks to open the shop shutters. The locals who visited a nearby tea stall during morning hours alerted the shop owner as they found empty jewellery boxes thrown near the shop whose shutters and locks were broken.

The shop owner M Nageshwar Rao rushed to the shop and after inspecting the shop he lodged a complaint with the local police. He claimed that there was Rs 50, 000 cash, 24 boxes of ornaments and nearly 70 kg of silver ornaments worth about Rs 1 crore in the shop.

Mahabubabad Superintendent of Police N Koti Reddy visited the shop and enquired about the incident with the local police. Clues team and dog squad were pressed into service and the footage of CCTV cameras installed near the shop was collected for examination.
