- Key meeting on admissions
- Counselling from August 27
Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh health minister Kamineni Srinivas on Tuesday said that medical counselling notification would be issued on Wednesday.
The minister stated that counselling would be held from August 27 to August 31.
Senior officials of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) and representatives of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh did not arrive at common counselling dates in the meeting which was held on Monday. Hence, a meeting would be held on Wednesday with top officials of both governments on the medical admissions, sources said.
Meanwhile, the private medical college managements are strongly pitching for hike in the management quota seats. The managements have come with the proposal of increase in management quota from 40 per cent to 50 per cent from this 2014-2015 academic year. This means, 50 per cent of seats would be filled with convener quota and 50 per cent for management seats.
It is learnt that Admissions and Fee Regulatory Committee (AFRC) which recommends fee structure to the government, has proposed a common fee of Rs 2.5 lakh for all colleges. However, the college managements which advocated for common fee structure were against common fee as it is way too low for the MBBS course. While Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments made it clear that there would not be a hike in the fee structure, as it would be a burden on the states exchequer.
The proposals of managements come in wake of both the governments refusing to increase fee structure for the courses. If the governments increase the management quota, it would be a deathblow for medical aspirants of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as 10 per cent of seats would be cut down from convener quota.
A total of 45 colleges are present in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states with 6,100 seats. Of these 6,100 seats currently around 2,950 seats are up for grab in five government medical colleges, 12 non minority colleges and three minority colleges in Telangana State.
It may be noted that the Supreme Court in its order issued this June stated that classes should begin by September 1 and the last date to fill vacant seats is September 30.
