As per the ordinance of Supreme Court, Kerala Government, on April 11, 2017, made NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) a mandatefor Government as well as Private medical colleges admission process. This year CBSE, the conducting body of the exam, will hold NEET on May 7, 2017.

It has been ascertained that the power to regulate fee structure and admissions will be handed over to a regulatory committee consisting of a retired judge and members of State government and Medical Council of India (MCI). If any college would try to flout this decision, the committee shall have powers similar to a civil court to take strict actions against them.

It would fix the fee and finalize an agreement with the management. Fine of up to INR 10 lakh would be levied if violation of the pact is detected. As told by Chief Minister PinarayiVijayan, with the implementation of this order, the admissions to the government and the private medical colleges in Kerala will be totally merit-based and on the basis of the ranking in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

The aim of this ordinance which received the nod from members of cabinet meeting as well as Governor, is to standardize the fee structure and protect/reserve seats for the candidates from backward communities as well as SC/ST categories.

Displaying his disapproval against the said order, Anil Kumar, secretary of Kerala Private Medical College Management Association said, “The war has begun. The moment governor signs on this law, we will challenge it in courts.”

From now on, the admissions for MBBS and BDS courses would be from the NEET list, while for other medical and para-medical courses, the government entrance test would be the criteria for admissions.
