The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has come up with a plan of developing 'green curtains' – covering the walls adjacent to footpaths with creepers and flowering plants to curb open urination, spitting and littering by people.

GHMC to plant shrubs alongside compound walls in all major junctions

The tree plantations would be protected by the erection of kerbs all along the compound walls. The civic body is planning to cover a 1,000 kilometres stretch with greenery in all the five zones.

GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said that the GHMC would be planting ground covers, shrubs and trees along the compound walls in three levels to cover the entire compound wall.

In certain stretches, Lantana, Aralia and Tecoma Gaudechaudi varieties would be planted. In other areas, a combination of Wadelia, Eranthemum Tricolour, Areca Palm and Hemigraphics, Bourgainvillea, Golden Bamboo would be used.

Somesh Kumar added that the move would increase the aesthetic look, curb open urination and would avoid wall writings and debris dumping.
