Official statement given out by the government of Brazil is that the mega reservoir near the capital Sao Paulo has just dried up leading to an unheard off. water crisis in a country which hosted the Amazon river .
The Amazon basin is the largest drainage basin in the world, about 7,050,000 square kilometres and accounts for approximately one-fifth of the world's total river flow.Officials say that the shooting mercury levels (45 to 55 degree celsius) and scant rainfall had driven a death blow to the country's environment and economy as well .
So how does a country that produces an estimated 12% of the world's fresh water end up with a chronic shortage of this most essential resource - in its biggest and most economically important city?
Sao Paulo's Water Authority has now acknowledged that unless water levels recover in the reservoir and also the drying rivers of the country there may be huge power cuts and more water rationing. Right now there is ration of 5 to 10 litres of water to each family per day . Everyone is praying for more rain, hoping that it's not too late.
