'Rapes happen all over India, not in Delhi alone'

New Delhi (PTI): Amidst strong protests over the rape and brutality meted out to a five-year-old girl in New Delhi, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde made another gaffe saying rapes were not in Delhi alone but across the country. Making a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha, Shinde gave details of the incident in Gandhi Nagar area of East Delhi on April 15 and the investigations conducted so far.

He said the Station House Officer (SHO) and the Investigating Officer (IO) had been placed under suspension taking note of the lapses in the investigation. Minor rape victim showing signs of recovery. "The Joint CP (Vigilance) has been asked to conduct an inquiry. The Jt CP (Vigilance) shall also enquire into the allegation that the local police paid some money to the father of the victim to hush up the case," Shinde said in a statement which was laid on the table of the House.

Shinde has said that such incidents (rape) happen elsewhere in the country too, while trying to defuse the prevailing tension in the country. He made a similar gaffe during the December protests over the gang-rape of Nirbhaya blaming women also for such atrocities.
