Set in a nook in Jubilee Hills, with tiny bird houses in its courtyard, grey circular tables and tones of periwinkle blue and old rose pink painted across the enchanted, Tumblr café, the Hummingbird cafe is the new place to be.
A large white shelf of little tid-bits, aesthetic books, potted plants and large teacups lines one side of the café. On the other side is the counter, with a glass case lined with frosted red velvets and gooey chocolate cakes. Seated at one of the circular tables that is surrounded by an orbit of pink and blue chairs, we tried out some of the Hummingbird Café’s signature dishes.
Our recommendations
A hot summer day calls for a cool, sunny, refreshing Caesar salads. A bed of crisp Romaine lettuce and parmesan topped with crunchy garlic croutons and Caesar salad. A bite of the lettuce opens a door into reinvigorating salad haven.
The parmesan adds a boost of flavour and piquancy to the dish. The garlic croutons complement the parmesan perfectly, the sheer saltiness of the parmegianno regianno goes hand in hand with the buttery taste of the croutons. The Caesar dressing added a dash of tangy spice to the dish and brought the salad full circle.
It’s always a good day for chicken skewers, succulent and char-grilled chicken slathered in a spicy sauce and served alongside a jalapeno dip is definitely recommended.
Usually, onion rings are clogged with oil and have a think panko crumb crust, however this was not the case with the Hummingbird café’s onion rings. The onion rings were light on oil, with a crumbly, salty exterior paired a soft, flavourful inside. Served with a chilli mayo dip, the onion rings are the perfect summer snack kick.
Thin crust pizzas, should be declared to be the only type of pizza. They offer a wide range of thin crust pizzas that are a treat for your taste buds. We decided to opt for a half and half, with the zesty roasted garlic on one side and the fool proof broccoli on the other.
A slice of the roasted garlic catches you unawares and sends shocks of marinara up your spine. The mozzarella pairs beautifully with the tartness of the lemony chicken. The fool proof broccoli as the name suggests, is most definitely fool proof.
The delicate broccoli caresses the capsicum gently and makes for a slice of pizza that is flawless except for the slightly overpowering taste of the yellow capsicum.
Following the pizza, we opted for the classic veggie pasta. To our surprise, the pasta was a low after a good gastronomic run. The veggie pasta was paired with capsicum, which was frankly overpowering, can be given a miss.
We concluded the meal with a cold Oreo shake. Layers of oozing Belgian chocolate coupled with mounds of whipped cream and crushed Oreo drizzled with chocolate sauce. The shake was the perfect antidote to the hot, humid, sun-soaked summer weather. The Hummingbird café is perfect for a chill day out with friends reserved for endless selfies with Snapchat filters, good food and of course, cake.
However, please keep in mind one technical flaw, the restaurant is packed with people, this says a lot about their food but keeps it short when it comes to the service. The service can take quite long, but as they say or should say ‘The fruit of patience is a chicken skewers or an Oreo shake.’
