On the occasion of International Girl Child Day, Bikethon - Save the Girl Child Campaign is being organised by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) and Tharuni, an NGO, to highlight the importance of girl child and to improve the child sex ratio in the state on October 11 at 7.30 am.

Member of Parliament and president of Jagruthi K Kavitha will inaugurate the Bikethon. The Bikethon will start at Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, and would end at AP Forest Academy, Dulapally.

In Telangana, the girl child numbers are coming down year by year. The 2011 Census shows that there are only 938 girls per 1,000 boys. It was 957 girls per 1,000 boys in the 2001 Census. So there is a 17 point drop in ten years which is a cause of serious concern and it may further slip in the coming years if no corrective action is taken.

The three main reasons for this fast decline in child sex ratio are cited as increase of scanning centres resulting in foeticide, high incidence of infanticide and discrimination of girl child in providing nutrition and medical care.

Anybody can register for the bike rally by sending an SMS to 9000243000 by typing – Bikethon, their name followed by the name of their institution. Participants are required to bring their bikes for the event.
