Dr Sheela KrishnaswamyDr Sheela Krishnaswamy who was in the city to speak about the countless benefits of including almonds in a daily diet says “A balanced diet has a variety of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and a lot more. And, thus almonds play a major role. They need to eat food which is rich in protein, having medium amounts of carbohydrates and little amount of fats.

People who work in sedentary jobs or have a sedentary life style have to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables”, she said and further added “Diets are prepared based on health problems. Therefore they differ based on the medical condition/prescription. It is not necessary to be thin to stay healthy. The body main mass index of an Indian has to be 18 - 23 which is the normal range.”

Talking more on junk, Dr Sheela emphasized on how junk food should not be taken in excess, how it can affect our health giving birth to new diseases like diabetes, blood pressure. Sharing her views on packaged food, she said “Not all packaged foods are un-healthy. Package foods which are healthy provide some amount of nutrients like almonds.

We have to look at the important parameters in the label. On the other hand, the un-healthy ones have high fats, sugar, sodium, refined grains and lots of additives because of which a person’s nutrition levels drop and health gets affected.” Expressing her views on fixed time meals and being a non- veggie are mandatory or not, she said “There are no fixed timings for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We should have five hours gap between breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you follow five hours gap between your food intake then your health won’t get affected. Don’t miss your breakfast as it could cause hyper acidity. And, it’s not necessary to take meat related food to be healthy. Vegetarian food has lots of nutrients.”
