A two-day sports event for mixed age groups began at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium in the city on Wednesday. Badminton, volleyball, basketball, throwball, football, hockey and other matches will be held during the event, which is part of the month-long Prerana Youth Fest 2015’ of Rotary Club of Vijayawada.

Prizes will be given away to winners of the sports event at the valedictory of the youth festival on September 25. Participating in the inaugural programme as a chief guest, District Sports Development Officer (DSDO) P Ramakrishna said, ``Sports is a must for students to be physically fit and mentally relaxed.

Participation in sports helps students develop sportsmanship and leadership qualities, besides enhancing their concentration power. Every student should strive to excel in his favourite sport on par with academics.

It is unfortunate that most of the corporate educational institutions which are more focused on achieving top ranks in examinations, are not giving due importance to sports.

Neglect of sports proves to be detrimental to the holistic growth of students. Rotary Club president MV Suresh Kumar, Youth Festival directors NSRK Prasad and K Jagadeesh Kumar were also present.
