Sunshine Hospitals becomes the first in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to successfully implant SUPERA technology stent

The newly launched flexible ‘SUPERA’ stent, which can be placed across joints, was successfully implanted by Sunshine Hospitals. The hospital stands first across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in successfully implanting the kink resistant flexible stent with lesser rate of re-stenosis.

The procedure was performed by Dr Sridhar Kasturi, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Sunshine Hospitals, on Hari Prasad (47) from Medchal. Prasad underwent amputation of left great toe, which was caused due to a non healing ulcer. A second ulcer on the right foot resulted in lack of blood flow through blockage of popliteal artery.

After investigations, Dr Kasturi opened the blood vessel of the right leg across the knee joint by performing plain Angioplasty without stenting; existing stents were not suitable to be placed across knee joint as it would fracture or lead to stent thrombosis. When the patient developed re occlusion of popliteal artery, Dr Kasturi implanted the new technology stent.

The patient is stable and comfortable after the procedure. Speaking on the technology, Dr Kasturi said that it supports natural movements and curvature of the human blood vessel structure. “It is the best choice for challenging cases with tortuous, long, calcified lesion in arteries of leg across the joints,” concluded the doctor.
