Hyderabad: The move by the TRS government to effect hefty hike in the salaries of legislators and also those holding Cabinet rank posts has come in sharp criticism from various quarters. It has also triggered a political debate whether such a step is justifiable when the debt-ridden farmers are committing suicide in the State.

  • Increase in salaries of legislators

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is believed to have agree to increase the salaries of the legislators (both MLAs and MLCs) by threefold following a representation by the elected representatives from all parties. The Chief Minister has in fact held discussion with senior officials in this regard.

The additional burden of Rs 14.94 crore will be imposed on the State exchequer if the salaries for legislators are increased. But, the Chief Minister has reportedly observed that such an additional burden on the exchequer is miniscule.

Moreover, if the present day cost is factored and expenditure being incurred by legislators to tour their respective constituencies is taken into consideration, KCR is understood to have found justification in the demand for hike in salaries.

He has also believed to have cited the example of the Delhi government giving big increase in salaries of legislators. A decision, according to sources, will be, however, taken only after a discussion in the Amenities Committee headed by Assembly Speaker and amendments are made to the existing laws.

Congress Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao said though he was not against the government’s move, he felt that it was not the appropriate time when the State was reeling under acute drought conditions, scarcity of drinking water and farmers continuing to commit suicide.
