Malls to restrict bikers sans helmets

Hyderabad: All two-wheeler owners better be warned. You can no longer take the custodians of law for a ride, particularly if you are the kind who breaks rules. Like the latest mandated ruling - wearing of helmets.

Lest you think you can zip, zap and zoom to the theatre, mall or a pub in your neighburhood, better do so either by in an auto, a cab or better still walk down to the destination. Two-wheeler owner minus the helmet will be denied space in the parking lots in over 200 such select public paces even if there is enough space.

The managements of such outlets have been issued a new rule by the State Transport Department in coordination with the Home and Labour departments. Two-wheeler riders without a helmet would be denied entry into these social get-together joints, which are to display posters at parking places in the premises about the new rule.

To ring in their seriousness about going about the rule, the city traffic police personnel have already launched an ‘educative’ drive laced with warnings to the managements, which tend to overlook the rule book. In a humane consideration, the managements have been urged to distribute pamphlets about the new helmet rule to the customers.

The managements have also been warned of penalty if they failed to lead the campaign. The fear has been instilled firm and truly given that the authorities would be conducting surprise checks at periodical intervals. As of now, no fine would be imposed on the visitors without helmet at the malls, an official said.

The new initiative has been taken up to ensure that the people will get into the habit of wearing helmets, which is essentially for their own safety. The offices of the Road Transport Authorities, Hyderabad Collectorate and some other government offices in Hyderabad have already enforced the rule whereby two-wheeler owners minus helmets would not be allowed inside the premises.

This is likely to be implemented in all other State Government offices. Prior to that, the GHMC will intensify a special drive wherein the importance of wearing helmets would be driven home.
