Secunderabad Tehsildar and Jubilee Bus Station authorities jointly demolished hutments in Gandhi colony, Picket. The land beside Picket Bus Stop belongs to TSRTC and it was occupied illegally in spite of the authorities providing them shelters in Weaker Section Colony, which was developed under the schemes Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) and Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for 376 families.
Mary Rekha, executive engineer, JBS, said: “They acquired 19.20 acres land for Jubilee Bus Station and for a workshop in 1983, of which three acres were occupied by 156 hut dwellers; we provided them shelter and they agreed to move in the new houses.
However, the number of huts rose to 241 in 1987 and instead of occupying the houses, which were provided to them under various schemes they rented out those houses and continued to live in the huts. Our efforts to vacate from the land turned futile for years now; hence we are forced to take this action for eviction to get back our land.”
Zubeda Begum, Tehsildar, Secunderabad, said, “We had demolished a few structures on July 2, and gave seven days notice for eviction and they still did not vacate, hence we were forced to demolish other structures to give the land back to TSRTC.”
Mohd Habeeb, (60) was residing in Gandhi Colony since his childhood and he said that they represented a request to district collector, revenue divisional officer and tehsildar to regularise the house pattas of the occupants.
“We sent our pleas for the land situated in S.no 170 in 3.20 acres, vide 07-01-2014, 10-07-2014 and 17-11-2013 but it fell on deaf ears and now the government is evicting us without providing us alternative accommodation.”
A group of people said that they didn't get any allotment in the Weaker Section Colony and still some houses are vacant. The hut dwellers, in large numbers, protested against demolition, which led to a tense environment, which was subdued by Karkhana and Maredpally police personnel.
The demolition spree was carried out in the presence of Gangadhar, regional manager, Rangareddy district, Satyanarayana, depot manager, Cantonment and Karkhana and Maredpally police personnel.
