Karimnagar: Diwali, the festival of lights, is never complete without the traditional bursting of firecrackers. But there is also an increasing concern over environment pollution and safety issues involved in making and bursting the crackers.

Apart from fun and frolic, it can result in many a life threatening accidents and serious health issues after Diwali, with the particulate and gaseous pollutants in the atmosphere.

“Firework accidents occur primarily due to crackers, which explode like bombs, poor quality flowerpots and rockets. Fire crackers usually injure hands and eyes.

Basic first aid for firecracker injury is washing the injured part immediately with clean water. In case of severe burns, one has to be rushed to the nearest doctor.

Good quality, non-explosive crackers like sparklers and pencils are better for children under supervision of elders, suggested Dr Vasant Naik of Karimnagar.

The Sub-Inspector Swaroop Raj of Gangadhara mandal in Karimnagar district warned the owners of firework shops not to open shops without license.

He also said that the crackers manufactured in China were banned and permission was not given for their sale in India. Selling such fireworks is strictly prohibited.

If anyone tries selling of such crackers stringent actions will be taken against them and their shops will be seized, he warned.

Gangirala Sridhar, a social worker felt that the best way to celebrate the festival was by sticking to eco-friendly crackers made with recycled paper.

There are factories that manufacture such crackers that emit less smoke and produce less sound within the noise limit of 125 to 145 decibels along with producing more light. The people can rejoice in bursting such eco-friendly crackers.

By adopting preventive measures and taking proper steps towards eco-friendly, the festival can be enjoyed much better, he added.
