Father and daughter duo (Shankar Narayan and Maanasi) are presenting two generations of experience via photos of Ladakh at Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad. The exhibition is about two ages, two timelines and two perspectives.
“I have started taking pictures from the last 7 years. I’m inspired by my family. My father is a photographer since 1980. He used my grandfather’s camera and similarly I used his camera.
Renowned architect Shankar Narayan and his daughter, Maanasi exhibit their photographs of Ladakh at Goethe-Zentrum, Maanasi talks about their experiences
From my childhood I was surrounded by cameras. Now, my brother also started taking pictures. Usually, I travel to many places for my product design works and during that time I captured many photos.
I do not go any location for photos; photographs should happen naturally. I just see the moment and capture,” said Maanasi Shankar.
Speaking about their recent trip to Ladakh, she shared “We knew little when we travelled to Ladakh in August, 2015 that a virtually barren land could be inhabited by such wonderful people.
More wondrous was the photogenic city and it was difficult to hold back the photographer in us. We went for an Earth construction workshop near Leh and other places in Ladakh.
An entire exhibition can be filled with these pictures. The light- frame ones are mine and the dark –frame ones are belong to my father,”
“My works include photos of- school girls in Kargil, women of the family, Sonamarg, truck drivers taking a tea break, Dargah in Srinagar and Mughal Garden in Srinagar.
And my father used dark- frame and captured a girl at Dha Hanu village in North Ladakh, shepherding at the Tso-moriri Lake, South Ladakh, Zoji La and a family in Kargil,” she adds.
“My works are different compared to my father’s works. We love travelling and we did travelling like friends. When we traveled around Ladakh for 30 days, we enjoyed it.
I have never followed him and all my works reflects my own way. We never even suggested each other. In my words photography should not be artificial and edited and we have to show the original,” she shared.
