Warangal: A tearful adieu was bid to M Vamshi Reddy (26), a student who became the victim of homicide in the US, at his native place Vangapahad village on the outskirts of Warangal city on Friday.

The atmosphere in the village was emotionally charged as Vamshi Reddy’s friends and family members, local residents and leaders in large numbers thronged to offer homage to the deceased student, who went to the US in 2015 to pursue MS in computer science.

The body arrived at the village at around 9.30 am and the last rites were performed during afternoon hours. Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya, along with the local BJP leaders Rao Padma, M Dharma Rao, A Rakesh Reddy, Ch Janga Reddy and others visited the village.

The Union Minister interacted with Vamshi Reddy’s parents Sanjeeva Reddy and Rama Devi and their family members and expressed deep condolences to them over the loss of their son.

Later speaking to presspersons, Dattatreya said the Indian government has been holding consultations with the US government to ensure safety of the students from the country.

There seems to be a panic among Indian students over the recent developments in the US and the Centre was making efforts address the issue.

He promised to offer all possible help to support the aggrieved family from the Centre. Former mayor Errabelli Swarna, TDP leader R Prakash Reddy, former MLA K Sridhar and others also paid visit to the village and condoled the family members of Vamshi Reddy.

It might be recalled that Vamshi Reddy was shot dead on February 10 inside the parking garage of an apartment building in Milpitas City while he was returning home after completing a part-time work at a local departmental store.

Meanwhile, the local newspapers in Milpitas city have on Thursday (US time) reported that a 30-year-old Stuart Ison Baronngaue of Fremont city in Alameda County, California was arrested in connection with the homicide and was lodged at Santa Clara County Main Jail.

On the other hand, efforts were made to collect funds to return Vamshi Reddy’s body to India and to support his family through a local free crowd-funding platform ‘YouCaring’, designed to help fellow students.

A web page on YouCaring site organised by an Indian student Saikumar Dona has raised US dollars 59,983 by 2,092 donors as on February 17 as against the goal of collecting 50,000 US dollars.
