Manuguru: Recently, a Class V student, belonging to Illandu, was stung by a scorpion while washing clothes in the Social Welfare hostel, where he is an inmate. The government residential school is housed in a leaky, old and dilapidated building located amidst green fields here.

The building, built about 30 years ago, was abandoned by a private school. However, it managed to lease the building to the Social Welfare hostel using its political clout.

Following the scorpion-bite incident, some of the parents took their wards home fearing danger. All around the school, there are snake pits and heaps of garbage.

Moreover, the roof is leaky and blankets are being used to protect the children from rain. In a space which is fit enough to accommodate 50 students, 240 are accommodated cramming them in the tiny place.

The parents are criticising the authorities for housing the residential school in an old building in spite of availability of pucca and modern buildings in the mandal. They have been urging the authorities to relocate the students to a safer building.
