The strong significance of fasting is to bring about a spiritual awakening and is recognized as a technique to practice self control.

But why is Rock salt replaced with common salt during the vrat??

There is significance during navratri for using rock salt known as saindhava in ayurveda. Ayurvedam recommends rocksalt for a host of reasons as it is the purest type of salt owing to its unprocessed form. As table salt is iodized and created by evaporation and processed to remove contaminants with the help of filtering.

As sendha namak is free from any chemical processing or pollutants.

Benefits of sendha namak:

  1. It has cooling properties compared to other salts
  2. It helps to balance the electrolytes in the body without affecting the blood pressure as it is low in sodium and high in potassium.
