The 67th Independence Day celebrations were done with traditional gusto in the old city region with educational institutions taking a leading role in organising flag hoisting programmes. Cultural events were staged to highlight the stellar contribution of the freedom fighters of the earlier era which enabled India to overthrow the colonial British rule.

One such institution, Rainbow Home, organised a rally in which nearly 160 students, predominantly consisting of girls, from the age of 6 to 18 participated in it. The theme of the rally was ‘Sagaya Rani’. The project coordinator informed that the theme was chosen to sensitize the plight of the womenfolk in India where rampant discrimination exists in every field.

Even after receiving Independence, the situation of women in the country has not improved much. In various rural areas, they are abused both physically and mentally and in some places they are even sold to people as slaves. Though the government has introduced various schemes for women empowerment, it is not implemented fully. The reported cases of abuse against women are increasing steadily as the years pass. Hence, the theme reinforced the concept of safety of women.

Participants in the rally were encouraged to ask many questions and many raised pertinent questions about the open double standards with regard to women empowerment. Men seemed to be able to do things at will while women had to be dependent on them for everything. Old city is vulnerable as there is an increase in the incidents of domestic violence, a serious cause of concern for the women living in this area.

The rally began at Charminar and ended at Gulzar Houz was well-appreciated by the onlookers. At Dewan Devdi, Mir Inayat Ali Bakhri, Project-in-charge hoisted the national flag. The others who were present included Ganesh, Chairperson, Hawkers’ Committee, Advocate M A Shakeel and Ambika, Convenor, Aman Vedika, Rainbow Home.
