Transformation is a beautiful example to follow in terms of deciding to live reflectively, give generously of oneself and share without shame. It makes you wonder what a work of art all our lives could be. The surroundings, are depicted in his paintings. The surroundings in which he was brought up have a great impact on his life and it is depicted in his pictures.

The pictures gain expression through his imagination. There are no hidden stories or complexities underlying in his work; and these all centre on the ‘outside’ natural world. The ‘inside’ gains special emphasis because most of his observation revolves around various interior parts of his house. Even certain aspects of the colony where he came from have gained life in his paintings, albeit with certain colourings of his own imagination.

In order to differentiate between the ‘upper class’ and ‘middle class’ Sumanto Chowdhury has shown different architectural designs within the same painting. Even inside these separate classes lurk his fantastic architectural landscape which we seldom find in the present world. He has merged various ‘mediums’ together in his paintings.

He has worked with various mediums and grasped inspiration from various places. He received great lot of inspiration from his teacher and guru, K Laxma Goud and has constantly emphasised that one has to first fully understand a ‘medium’ and then put it to use in its own essence; and the most important thing is that if one is capable of loving a ‘medium’, the ‘medium’ too reciprocates in its own kind.

Sumanto Chowdhury has done his BFA from Kala-Bhavana, Visva Bharati,Santiniketan MFA (Print Making) S N School,University of Hyderabad. He is a recipient of several awards and scholarships. Paintings with the theme Transformation are on display at Shrishti art gallery from August 17 to September 2. “Whatever is ahead, I feel it’s going to be a creative and transforming journey.” says Sumanto Chowdhury.
