The Hyderabad Metro Rail project is now in full swing but for the completion of Metro Rail Corridor II, the pillars will have to be erected in a church area abutting a graveyard, all in all ensuring that a few graves stones will be removed.
No matter how noble the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project is, it has always been at the receiving end of various religious groups and sects. Under the Metro Rail Project, the HMR group has been given rights to acquire land for laying tracks. But with certain constructions proposed to be laid over religious installations, the organisation has been facing criticism from the concerned groups. Recently, there’s has been much furore over the Mettuguda Church acquisition but HMR is determined to go ahead with the construction.
For the laying of the Metro Rail Corridor II, the St Thomas’ Tamil Cathedral will have to undergo a partial demolition for the pillars to be laid. In this case, one of the pillars will be erected atop a graveyard. This proposal has severely hurt the sentiments of the church and general public alike. To protest against this, the church along with the devotees, staged a silent march against the Metro Rail Project. Taking part in this silent rally were prominent entities like Christine Lazarus, MLA and Swarnajith Sen, former DGP, Hyderabad.
Samuel Thomas, president of the church, said, “It is abysmal for them to consider building a pillar over a graveyard. It has hurt many people’s sentiments and we are going to speak up against it. Initially, the plans showed that it was a straight route and did not hamper the church premises but all of a sudden we were told that they will be tearing down parts of the church for the pillars to be erected. This church is very old and it is about 200 years old. Our fathers and fore-fathers have all prayed here.”
The church officials have also written a letter to Jayasudha, MLA, Secunderabad, who in return has pledged her support for the cause. In her letter she mentioned that she will do everything in her power to divert the project from disrupting the church and its premises.
