A conference on ‘Beyond the Rhetoric: Solutions towards Neonatal Survival’ was conducted jointly by the Nice Foundation and Effective Intervention in the city on Friday.

Governor ESL Narasimhan, who inaugurated the conference, stressed the importance of neonatal health care. Stating the conference as a timely gesture, he said the neonatal mortality rate was still a cause for concern today. Mother and child-tracking system would play a key role in improving the neonatal healthcare, he observed.

He reiterated that State government had been doing more developmental work in this field, though there was criticism of poor transport and poor health facilities in the hilly terrains and remote areas in the State. He lauded the services of Nice Foundation in health and education fields in the State. He also called for spreading awareness in rural and remote areas on the importance of reducing neonatal mortality rates.

Dr Padmanabha Reddy, CEO, NICE Foundation, released the findings of the cluster randomised control trial ‘Community Health and Medical Provision: Impact on neonates (CHAMPION Trial).’ It was conducted between 2008 and 2011 in Mahabubnagar district. ‘’With our scientific and cost-effective interventions, we managed 25 per cent decline in neonatal mortality rates in Nagarkurnool in Mahabubnagar district. These interventions can be replicated across the country especially in the difficult tribal regions”, he said.

“Before introducing our effective interventions in the district, the neonatal mortality rate in Nagarkurnool was 6.9 per cent. We worked in 232 villages in that district,” said Chitra Jayanty, CEO of Effective Intervention. Dr Peter Boone, executive chairman, Effective Intervention, said the trial had proved that neonatal mortality can be reduced rapidly by using scientific and low-cost models of healthcare.
