The Mumbai mafia, better known as the underworld, has always been looked upon as an elite group, in comparison with others across the country. Of course, the romanticism with which it has been portrayed on celluloid by some of the biggest names in the Hindi film industry has added glamour to the murky dealings of the goons. But this apparent raucous association has not ceased with movies. Simians and minions still love to be called that way, apparently the association is niche.

Hyderabad is expanding to far corners and so is crime in the city. Few gangs are into extortions, kidnaps and settlements, claiming that they belong to Dawood - Chota Rajan gang or their rival gang Chota Shakeels'. Ashok gang is one such gang which claim to be minions of Chota Rajan. Headed by Ashappa alias Ashok, the gang has been actively involved in extortions for the past two years in the Cyberabad Commissionerate area. Reportedly, Saleem, the right hand man of Chota Rajan, supplied them with 9mm pistols in the past, the same 9mm pistols which are used by police and army.

On September 5, Madhapur Police arrested the gang members Sunkari Prasad alias Allagada Prasad Reddy, K Srinivas Reddy and Jagapathi Maheswar Reddy and seized three pistols and cash worth Rs 2.70 lakh. However, chieftain of the gang Ashok, escaped and police announced a bounty of one lakh on information about Ashok’s whereabouts. In the interrogation, police found out that the gang had extorted money from ten industrialists, to the tune of Rs 10 lakh.

Three days ago, Cyberabad Police arrested Abdul Kabir, who is reportedly an aide of Chota Shakeel and seized 70 SIM cards from him.

There was a case registered against Abdul Kabir in 2010 at Andheri PS, Mumbai. The Cyberabad Police have informed the Mumbai Police of the arrest.

In an interview with a regional newspaper, Cyberabad Commissioner of Police, CV Anand said, “Special teams have been designated to crackdown on these sorts of crimes. We are leaving no stone unturned, to nip this in the bud.”

Dawood, Chota Rajan and Chota Shakeel gangs are notorious for their betting, extortion and kidnapping. They concentrate on new constructions, new business houses, gold and diamond merchants.

  • Businessmen and budding corporates targeted
  • Crimes include settlements, extortions and kidnaps

These Mumbai based gangsters, started recruiting city gangsters, 12 years back. Ali Bhai alias Ali, a resident of Medak, an infamous murderer was recruited by the D-Gang, to do settlements. Aziz Reddy was recruited by Chota Rajan. While the activities subdued after Aziz Reddy’s encounter in 2008, things have started picking up all again.
