India Post has been making its presence felt in the e-commerce space. A year since it joined the e-commerce segment, the department did business worth Rs 280 crore in the Cash-on-Delivery (CoD) segment. The India Post AP Circle has been contributing to the growth story. BV Sudhakar, chief postmaster general, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, says, “With modernisation of India Post and timely measures, the results are noticeable. From mechanised clearance of letter boxes to getting into e-commerce segment, the shift has been swift.”
- Naaptol is sending one lakh articles per month through India Post AP
- Snapdeal is sending about 400-500 articles daily
- Accounts for Flipkart and Amazon on the anvil
- India Post collects over Rs 280 cr via CoD for
- e-commerce firms
- India Post has 1,54,818 lakh post offices, making it the world's largest postal network.
- e-commerce business in India is expected to touch USD 76 billion by 2021 of which delivery and logistics would constitute 12 per cent.
Naaptol, the e-commerce firm sends anywhere between 2-3 lakh articles per month through India Post and a major chunk of the business is captured by the AP Circle. About one lakh articles are sent from the India Post AP Circle. G Suryanarayana, assistant director (Marketing), Chief Post Master General Office, AP Circle said, “Business in the Cash-on-Delivery (CoD) segment is looking up. E-commerce customers are aspiring to use Business / Express Parcel Service of India Post.”
The India Post AP Circle has already made arrangement with Snapdeal, another e-commerce firm to pick up parcels from the godowns. At present Snapdeal is sending 10,000 parcels per month through India Post in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. A senior official at the office of the Chief Post Master General, AP Circle said that talks are on with Flipkart and soon an account would be opened.
Under the mechanised clearance system of ‘Nanyatha’ programme, postmen are given mobile phones with android technology. “Sorting and clearing of letters on the same day has reduced the delivery time,” says G Suryanarayana. With tracking facility of articles now available, customers would be able to track the articles at every stage by logging on to indiapost.gov.in. India Post has 1.55 lakh post offices and each post office serves 21 sq. km area and about 7,000 people.
NSS Ramakrishna, ASP, marketing division, Chief Postmaster General Office, says, “With modernisation of the India Post and the growing e-commerce market, there is a lot of scope for the department to make inroads especially in the smaller towns as the reach is widespread.”
