Graveyard gets a modern makeover.The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Phoenix Foundation turned around an old graveyard into a fully modernised one with bathrooms, lockers, electric pier, storage rooms, rest rooms, wash rooms, flower arrangement facilities, car parking and an on-site pandit to complete the rites.

The graveyard developed in an area of 3.7 acres has been rechristened Mahaprasthanam at a cost of three crore rupees at Jubilee Hills, Road No 45, would soon be thrown open to use, said a senior GHMC official. This is the first graveyard to have been modernised on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

Somesh Kumar, Commissioner & Special Officer, GHMC said, “A nominal fee would be collected for the services and 30 more graveyards in GHMC limits would be developed with modern amenities.” Live streaming of the entire process at the crematorium is a feature that would help people who cannot make it on the day and would be helpful for relatives who have settled abroad said a GHMC official.
