Rangadamini Kunta is located in Kukatpally. It is covered by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s (HMDA) Lake Protection Committee. According to a 2013 survey, the water spread area of the tank is 46 acres and its bund length is 568 metres.
The full tank level is 100 metres high and its perimeter is 2.6 km. The lake is fed by rains and was once used to provide water for agriculture and allied activities. It was also a source for drinking water for the locals.
Raghavendra Nagar, KPHB Colony, Viveknagar, Sanathnagar and the Gulf Oil Company, which was formerly known as Indian Detonators Ltd (IDL), are some of the landmark areas near the lake. The Metro Rail Project work is in full swing and the nearest station is a kilometre away. The nearest MMTS railway station is at Bharat Nagar. The lake is 10 km away from the Secunderabad Railway Station and 25 km away from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
History
According to locals, the lake derives its name from the 100-year-old Ranganayaka Swamy temple near the bund. Indian Detonators Ltd, which was established in 1961, was spread over in 950 acres near the lake. Now changed to Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd, it is owned by the Hinduja Group.
Problems
G Balaswamy, member of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL), said, “The lake was large and surrounded by patta and shikam land. It has been subject to massive encroachments for the past few decades and it has now reduced to half its original size. The government had sanctioned construction activities, violating the guidelines of the Supreme Court of India as per the Walta Act, 2002.
Also the government had constructed a 5 MLD sewage treatment plant at the lake. Unauthorised structures and shops have come up in the lake bed and its buffer zone.”The weir (outflow channel) adjacent to highway is choked with trash and needs to be cleaned. The perimeter of the lake must be fenced in order to prevent further encroachments and haphazard dumping.
The population density in Kukatpally Housing Board Colony (KPHB), which came up in 1979 and is spread over 1,300 acres, was next to nil till 1989. However, after the Erragadda Flyover was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Dr M Chenna Reddy in 1989, people started moving in to the colony and the entire sewage is let out into the lake.
The sewage is treated at the STP and excess water is released into the Hussain Sagar.Balaswamy appealed to the State Government to remove the illegal structures on the lake bed and its buffer zone and prevent further constructions.
