History

According to locals the lake existed since the Nizam’s era. The lake had a Nalla Regadi Bhoomi (fertile black soil) and was very favourable for cultivation and yielded good crops. The lake was used to conserve rain water coming from high altitudes, and the conserved water was used for domestic purposes, fishing and agricultural activities in those days. Since the soil is black and fertile, the lake become popular as Nalla Cheruvu.

Problems

G Balaswamy, member of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL), said, “The lake is layered with thick hyacinth and its bed and buffer zone have been subjected to massive encroachments in the last few years, reducing the lake to half its original size. This is mainly due to the neglect of the government, which had accorded sanctions for the construction activities, violating the Walta Act 2002 guidelines of the Supreme Court, which states that no construction should be taken up in the lake bed and buffer zone.”

Though the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities have demolished illegal structures partially, many others have come up in the lake bed and buffer zone.Balaswamy has appealed to the Telangana government to bring the lakes under Mission Kakatiya and revive the lake to its past glory.
