History

“Vidyanagar came into existence around 1950 to 1952. It includes areas from Adikmet to Nallakunta, east of Azamabad industrial area, Vigyanpuri colony, and Ramnagar Gundu. Vigyanpuri was a play camp where hut dwellers used to reside during 1965,” he added.

The Durga Bai Deshmukh Hospital was earlier a Quarantine Centre for plague disease personnel. Top university professors and intellectuals viz Prof. Laxmiranjanam, Prof. Diwakarla Venkatavadani, Prof. Laxmikanthaih, Prof. Venkataramana, Dr KL Rao, Prof. G Ram Reddy (former vice-chancellor and UGC chairman), Prof. PV Rama Kistaigh and many journalists, writers, researchers, students used to live here due to close proximity to the OU campus.

The name Vidyanagar was derived because the residents were in pursuit of education. The area was famous for Chalamaigh and Ramaigh hotels for breakfast and meals. There were two large water bodies Nagamaigh Kunta and Batukamma Kunta where paddy was cultivated. Unfortunately, these water bodies have vanished over the years.

Problems
The residents complain that the shifting of Azamabad industrial area to a safe distance as per the directions of the Supreme Court has not happened. People continue to suffer with air pollution. The morning walkers from Vidyanagar who proceed to the OU campus over the Railway Over Bridge are in the danger of falling in a manhole on the footpath.

The Osmania University main road lighting is very poor and walkers, mainly senior citizens, face problems. The residents of Adikmet have been requesting a park as a lung space and a playground for children. However, authorities have paid no heed to their needs.

The new Police Station located in Vidyanagar is ready for inauguration. However it was named as Nallakunta Police Station as per old nomenclature. As a result, there is confusion amongst the residents about jurisdiction and its functioning.
