Hyderabad: The Neknampur Lake, a stone’s throw from the historic Golconda Fort, which locals refer as a Persian brook has fallen prey to encroachment. Dhruvansh, an NGO working on lake conservation even received funds from the HMDA and cleared aquatic weed here recently, but failed to stop a 12-feet wall at the outlet in Ibrahimbagh Cheruvu.

The Neknampur Lake lies at the tail of Ibrahim Cheruvu opposite to Taramati Baradari.
Madhulika S Choudary of Dhruvansh alleges that a big construction company built the 12-feet wall so that the water body is hidden from prospective buyers. It is understood that the construction company plans to build villas at the mouth of Ibrahimbagh Cheruvu.

Locals say that the Ibrahimbagh Cheruvu has a rich history and the brook supplied water for the Inbrahimbagh garden. The Neknampur Lake becomes important as the water from Durgam Cheruvu flows into Malkam Cheruvu, joins the Ibrahim Cheruvu and enters Neknampur. From here it traverses and joins the Musi River.

Residents nearby the lake say that the storm water drains act as a saviour during floods and encroachments could have dire consequences. Madhulika says, “Thanks to the wide drain channel the froth that emanates from other lakes gets diluted and goes off through the Neknampur Lake. If constructions come up inside the lake a Bengaluru like situation is not far away.”

The lake has great significance as it dates to the Qutub Shahi times and is close to historic structures such as Taramati Baradari and Golconda Fort. Locals say that it has huge potential to be developed as a tourist spot.
