Suraram: Ignorance of government officials in curbing illegal water connections in colonies around Suraram is a cause of great concern for residents living in the area. While on one hand, people are unable to access safe drinking water in the state, on the other Manjeera water available in the area is being constantly exploited by a few for their private gains.
In a recent shocking incident, litres of potable water from pipelines en route Rajeev Gruhakalpa flooded the streets for two hours after a house owner tried to tap water by hiring a private plumber. Local people allege that perpetrators have been bribing officials to turn a blind eye on the serious issue.
"This problem has been happening for a long while. Despite several complains given to the officials none have bothered to question the culprits or take any action against them. If they don't do their duty then why do we need them at all? Moreover, every summer the authorities charge 500 to 600 Rs for every water tanker. But I question who should be held responsible for all the water wasted through unconstitutional means?" questions Ravi, a resident.
Dwellers in the area condemned the way in which people were hiring private plumbers to dig up the public corridors to avail illegal water connections and also expressed that the state government must take a stringent step to save the precious natural resources that rightfully must reach all the sections of the society.
“It is unfortunate that it is the educated public who were involved in such illegal and unlawful activities. If this keeps going on I am unsure if any mission can help be of help to quench the thirst of our people during summers." opines Madhu, an inhabitant of Suraram.
