Hyderabad: Social Activist Subbamma Passes AwayHyderabad: Eminent social worker, social reformer and feminist writer Malladi Subbamma (90) died here on Thursday after a prolonged illness. Born in Repalle of Guntur District, she was known for her activism in the fields of politics and culture. She had participated in several agitations along with her late husband V Ramanamurthy. She had also participated in the anti-liquor movement in the state which led to the ban on sale of liquor in the state. Mahila Abhyudaya, Abhyudaya Vivaha Vedika are among some of the organisations which were started by her for the emancipation of women.

She had also conducted several marriages for the downtrodden and was the editor of Stree Swetchcha as head of Institute of Advancement of women. She is among the few humanist activists in India who wrote over 60 books on various topics related to women’s rights like Hethuvadam ,Chikati Velugulu, Mahila Hakkulu, Veligina Jyoti and Kranti Kiranalu.

She was born on August 2, 1924, in Repalle of Guntur district. Literary community and the TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu expressed condolences over her death. According to her family members, the body of Subbamma will be kept at the house of her son in Somajiguda for people to pay homage and later the body would be donated to Osmania Medical College as per her wishes.
