Corporation demands early settlement of service charge dues

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has asked the South Central Railway (SCR) to clear dues worth Rs 33.70 crore. A senior GHMC official said that the railways is supposed to pay service charges to the Corporation instead of property tax at varying rates of 33, 50 and 70 per cent based on the services provided by the civic body.

The annual demand of service charge on SCR properties amounts to Rs 6.74 crore. The GHMC takes up works such as Road-over-Bridge (RoB) and Road-under-Bridge (RuB). It is because of the litigation between the two parties that some works are getting delayed inordinately.

A case in point is the ambitious RuB work at Alugaddabavi junction, which is yet to see the light of the day. Issues such as land acquisition and addition of overhead costs are delaying the execution of projects. GHMC officials say that the railway is adding a number of overheads on the actual cost, which is more than 200 per cent. It is believed that there are serious differences in the tender-bid amounts and what is actually being invested by the Corporation in accomplishing the works.
