Hyderabad based couple Uma and Krishna Prasad Chigurupati have completed the World Marathon Challenge by running seven half marathons in seven continents in seven days. With this feat, Uma, who elected to run a half-marathon in each continent over the seven days, has become the first female in the world to achieve this milestone. Together, they are the only couple in India and the world to complete this event.

While participating in the challenge, Uma and Krishna ran 147.5 kilometres over the seven-day period, spent 59 hours in the air and flew approximately 38,000 kilometres. The global route for the World Marathon Challenge was –Union Glacier (Antarctica), Punta Arenas (South America), Miami (North America), Madrid (Europe), Marrakech (Africa), Dubai (Asia) and Sydney (Australia).

The successful participants have been recognised by the Intercontinental Marathon Club, which provides the definitive list of marathoners in all seven continents. Uma and Krishna are well-known as the only Indian couple to have run a marathon on every continent. They are a part of the Marathon Grand Slam Club and the Guinness Book of World Records for this achievement which they completed in 2011.

Krishna is the MD of Granules India, a pharmaceutical company, headquartered in Hyderabad and Uma is the director of Krsma Estates, a boutique winery founded by the couple in the Hampi Hills. Talking about the inspiration to participate in the grueling marathon, Krishna said, “When I turned 60 last October, I decided that I should do something memorable.

What better than running seven marathons in seven continents in seven days? This was the first time that something like that was being organised. Uma and I decided to run half marathons and we set out with 10 other people from 8 countries and started the first run at Union Glacier, Antarctica. We carried our national flag with us and unfurled it at the end of each race in every continent. It is a proud moment for us as individuals and as Indians.”

“This was a physically and mentally exhausting challenge. We had to really push ourselves to run every day and complete each run within the prescribed time frame. We carried a bottle of Krsma’s 2012 Sauvignon Blanc along with us and decided to pop the cork when we completed the challenge successfully. We enjoyed a well-earned glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc in Sydney as a proper culmination to an extraordinary seven days,” said Uma.
