Members of the Basthi Vikas Manch (BVM) organised a meeting on Sunday at Gun Bazaar in Rasoolpura to address drinking water and sanitation issues to the slum dwellers of the area. The members also condemned the conversion of the playground in the area into a marriage function hall.

Amjad Khan, convener of BVM, said, “The playground near the Zilla Parishad High School is being converted into a marriage hall which was sanctioned by the SCB in June 2014. The association members condemn this activity as the noise from the marriage hall will disturb students while they are studying. In the area, there are more than 2,300 students studies of which 900 belong to the Government High School in the area, 1,300 from Kasturba High School and 50 from the Spurthi Cantonment School.”

The BVM has planned to move the court against the construction of the marriage hall. “The students are already suffering from lack of toilets and drinking water as both the drainage and water pipelines have been lying damaged for the past two months. However, after a marathon follow up with the SCB authorities, new pipelines are now being laid,” said Sunny Rai, coordinator, Basthi Vikas Manch. Over 150 residents and 80 students attended the programme.
