London: European Union (EU) foreign ministers have reportedly agreed to extend existing sanctions against Russia until September but have refused to impose a new wave of sanctions, as demanded by the EU leaders.

During "an extraordinary meeting" in Brussels, the ministers also agreed to discuss names to add to the list of individuals targeted for EU travel bans and asset freezes, reported the BBC.

The ministers met as clashes continued in eastern Ukraine.

Heavy shelling was reported near the town of Debaltseve, the location of a strategic railway junction between Donetsk and Luhansk.

Moscow denies any involvement in the conflict.
