10 kg gold, Rs 18.5 lakh robbed from Grameena Bank

Rajampet: In a daring robbery, a gang of unidentified burglars decamped with Rs.18.5 lakh and 10 kg gold worth Rs. 3.2 crore after breaking into Andhra Pragati Grameena Bank situated very near to the urban police station here in the early hours on Tuesday. The gold was pledged by the farmers to secure agriculture loans. The police later took the watchman into custody, DSP Anyonya said.

According to the police, the burglars gained entry into the bank by breaking the iron grill using a welding machine and smashing windows. They snatched the cash from the iron safe after breaking it by throwing it to the ground. Later, they grabbed the gold in the gunny sacks before leaving the bank premises. The miscreants are learnt to have spent about four hours on the premises.Following information received at around 7.30 am, the DSP visited the bank and collected details after summoning the manager.

Meanwhile, Sivasankar Reddy, regional manager, said that the gold which was stolen by the miscreants was pledged to the Bank by 62 farmers for securing agriculture loans.
