The month is marked by offering prayers and performing poojas, rituals, observance of customs, spiritual events and fastings.

This month is considered as the favourite month of Lord Shiva among all the 12 months. Things like gold, clothes and cows will be donated by observing a fast on all Mondays of the ‘Karthika Masam’.

The five temples of Lord Shiva, the famous Sri Gunti Malleshwara Swamy Temple at Kalvoddu, Sri Ramalingeshwara Swamy Temple at Brahman Bazar , Sri Kashi Vishweshwara Swamy Temple at Suggalawarithota, Sri Nagalingeshwara Swamy Temple near the NST Road and Sri Panchayana Kshetram at Prakashnagar are bedecked with lights along with beautiful paintings to create a spiritual sense among the devotees here in Khammam.

People observe rituals strictly without fail during this month. Taking a head bath with cold water daily, going to temples, lighting lamps, fasting and saligrama pooja along with chanting ‘Shiva Sahasranamam’ and reciting Shiva Stotras.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, Ramu Sharma, a priest said that a series of special pujas will be performed at the temples from the beginning of the Karthika Masam until the last day seeking blessings of Lord Shiva.

As per the puranas, it is believed that by performing the Vrattham in Karthika Masam Vratham strictly, one can get rid of past evil deeds or sins committed and purify oneself. Lighting lamps with ghee made from cow’s milk during the sunrise and sunset brings prosperity into our lives, Ramu Sharma added.

Sharma also said that Nagula chavathi, Samuhika Satyanaryana Swamy Vratham, Shiva Kalyanotsavam, Rudrabhishekam, Karthika Pournima and many programmes will be celebrated during this month at various temples present across the country.

D Anasuya Devi, an elderly women said, “The very first day of the Karthika Masam begins with lighting of ‘Akasa Deepam’ either at the entrance of one’s house or at the temple of Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu followed by several other activities in the month.”

The conclusion of the celebrations of Karthika Masam will begin with the observation of ‘Poli Swargam’. The people will take a holy dip in the sacred rivers which are nearby and by lighting the lamps (Deepams) in the trunks of a banana tree or at a Tulasi plant with winks ranging from 21 to 365 winks and some of them releasing the lamps into the water, she added.

Meanwhile, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) Divisional Manager Jagan said that keeping in view of the beginning of Karthika Masam, special bus services were provided for the devotees from Khammam who want visit to Annavaram, Shabarimala and Pancharasula.
