MSG or Monosodium Glutamate:

Maagi has been one of the packaged food products which always leave one with a peculiar taste that wants crave for more.The enticing flavor on your taste buds is due to the MSG factor which enhances the overall flavor of the food. MSG, the sodium salt of an amino acid called glutamic acid found in tomatoes, potatoes, mushrooms, other fruits and vegetables.


Even though MSG is measured to be safe, after unconfirmed reports of the 'Chinese restaurant syndrome' surfaced, it came under scrutiny as people claimed arose after consuming Chinese food.


The popular additive in MSG is known to be excitotoxins that are excitatory amino acids, that causes glutamate levels to spike in blood affecting some of the sensitive neurons in the brain. Similar to common salt, adding MSG with the sodium in it without controlling common salt might cause hypertension beyond certain levels.


Harmful effects of MSG:


While MSG has been declared as safe by the FDA for human consumption in limited quantities, however the recent events suggest against the use of MSG. Some health experts even though the side effects are not scientifically proven, have termed it as carcinogenic which leads to toxic effects on the human body inhibiting neurological functions such as memory.


Further consumption for a longer duration may cause neuronal death leading to seizures, panic attacks. Particularly kids consuming products with high amounts of MSG might suffer behavioral issues and adults might witness hyperactivity issues if 2.5 mg/g doses of MSG are consumed every alternative day.


Continual use of MSG might also cause to fat accumulation in the liver, according to research studies – leading to inflammatory effects on liver. Common symptoms of consuming excess MSG in your daily diet include muscular tenderness, headaches, hypertension, obesity, loss of appetite and diabetes.
