A beggars rehabilitation and resettlement policy is set to be implemented in Telangana as the state government has directed the Home and municipal administration departments to work on rehabilitation measures for beggars.

Last year, ahead of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in October, the Telangana government began focussing on the beggar menace.

The beggars were picked up with male beggars being placed in old observation home for boys behind Chanchalguda Jail while female beggars were housed in a building adjacent to Charlapally central prison in Medchal.

Following this, the prisons and correctional services department even proposed opening rehabilitation centers in all districts. However, the proposal was rejected by the state government suggesting that keeping the beggars in jails is not a permanent solution, instead instructed the police to come up with a long-term strategy.

Now, the beggars' rehabilitation and resettlement policy is being considered. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and police would play a major role in the policy.
