Srinagar (PTI): Five Hizbul Mujahideen militants were on Friday killed in an encounter with security forces in Ganderbal district in Kashmir. "Five militants belonging to the Qadri Asadullah group of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in a counter-insurgency operation in Preng area of Ganderbal in the wee hours today," a Defence spokesman said. He said the identities of the slain militants were being ascertained.
According to police sources, troops of 24 Rashtriya Rifles and police laid an ambush near the Najwan forest in Preng area, 65 kms from here, following input about movement of the ultras. The militants walked into the ambush in early hours on Friday and were asked to surrender, the sources said.
However, the militants opened fire on the security forces' positions which was retaliated by the army and police. Meanwhile, a senior army officer termed the killings of the militants a big success and claimed that the group had plans to strike the recently concluded Amarnath yatra.
"We were tracking them for nearly one year. They were behind the threats to the Amarnath yatra and also had plans to target some civilians," Major General R R Nimbodhkar told reporters at Wussan in Ganderbal. He said the operation was planned two days ago and at midnight, the group was spotted. "The encounter began at 4.00 AM and resulted in elimination of all the terrorists," he said.
Maj Gen Nimbodhkar expressed satisfaction that the operation was successful and that there were no civilian or security force casualties. Five AK rifles, six hand grenades and large quantity of war-like stores have been recovered from the possession of the slain militants, sources said, adding five militants were killed in the gun battle.
